Why a sync rule was switched off after a plan change, and how to get it back

Updated 4 October 2026

If a sync rule shows as Inactive after your trial ended or you changed plan, your new plan either does not include that kind of rule or has room for fewer rules than you had. GetCalendario switched the rule off. It did not delete it: the rule keeps its wording and its place in your list, and nothing about it is lost.

To get it back, move to a plan that includes it, then open the rule's menu on the Sync Rules screen and choose Activate. Switching a rule back on is a step you take; changing plan does not switch rules back on by itself.

When does this happen?

It happens when your plan changes to a different one, including a cancellation, and when your 14-day trial ends and you move to the Free plan. It does not happen while you stay on the same plan, and a change that leaves the plan the same, such as updating your card, does nothing to your rules.

Why was this rule chosen?

Two things can stop a rule, and they are settled in this order.

  1. The plan does not include the rule type. Free and Basic include matching on words in the title, notes or location, and on Visibility, with the actions Don't Sync, "Sync, but hide the details" and "Sync, but mark it private". They do not include rules on a label, color or category, rules on what an event is (all-day, repeating, reminder, length, Show As, importance, status), working-hours rules, the copy actions (adding text to the title, labeling, importance), or sending events to a different calendar. The 14-day trial, Premium and Pro include these. See sync rules by event property, how to sync only during working hours and how to label copied events.
  2. There are more rules than the plan allows. The limits are 1 rule on Free, 5 on Basic, 30 on Premium and the trial, and no limit on Pro. The rules that fit are kept running and the rest are switched off.

A rule the plan cannot run is dealt with first and never takes up one of the plan's slots.

Which rules are kept when there are too many?

You choose, ahead of time. While your 14-day trial is running, the Subscription page shows what will happen when it ends and asks you to "Choose the one rule to keep running". If you change between paid plans there is no picker: the rules that fit are kept in the order you made them. It lists only rules on the connections you keep, and rules the new plan cannot run are shown greyed out with the reason. If you make no choice, the oldest rule your new plan can run, on a connection that stays, is kept.

Connections have a limit too, and a connection over the limit is paused rather than deleted. The rules you keep are chosen from the connections that stay.

How do I see what happened?

On the Sync Rules screen, the rule's status says why it is off:

  • "Inactive · Needs Premium" means the plan does not include that kind of rule.
  • "Inactive · Plan is full" means the plan can run it but already runs as many rules as it allows.
  • Plain "Inactive" means the rule is off and your current plan is not what is stopping it. That includes a rule you switched off by hand, and a rule a past plan change switched off that you have not yet switched back on.

Choose History from the rule's menu to see a "Switched off" entry for the change, with the rule described in words.

How do I get the rule back?

  1. Move to a plan that includes what the rule needs; the status badge names the plan. See how to upgrade, downgrade or cancel and getcalendario plans compared.
  2. On the Sync Rules screen, open the rule's menu and choose Activate, then confirm.

If you cannot switch it on, the screen tells you why. When the plan already runs as many rules as it allows, the message is like "The Free plan runs one sync rule at a time, and that many are already running. Switch another one off first, or move to a plan that runs more." Switch another rule off, or move to a plan with a higher limit, and try again.

A rule you built on a plan that does not include it behaves the same way. It is saved with the button "Save, switched off" and stays inactive. After you upgrade, activate it from its menu.

What is never affected?

  • Rules are never deleted by a plan change, and neither are connections or copies already on your calendars.
  • You can always edit, deactivate or delete a rule, even when you are over the limit. The limit is checked when you add a rule or switch one on.
  • Your own calendars are never touched.

What to know

  • Rules written by your secondary accounts follow the same rules. If your plan includes no secondary accounts, their rules are switched off and stay saved. They do not switch back on by themselves; the secondary switches each one on again once your plan has room.
  • Switching a rule off or on goes back over events inside your sync window, like any rule change. See what happens when I add or delete a keyword.
  • For the 14-day trial and the Free plan, see the 14-day trial and the Free plan.
