How to close a team
Updated 10 October 2026
Only the Owner can close a team. Open People & Team, choose Close team... at the very bottom of the team card, type the team's name to confirm, and press Close team. Everyone is taken off the team, each person is told, nothing more is charged, and the team is deleted once nobody is left on it.
Cancelling the team's subscription closes the team too. If the Owner cancels it on the billing page that Card and invoices opens, the team is closed the same way, with nothing lapsing or pausing first. Cancelled to end at the end of the period already paid, the team keeps its plan until that day and closes then; taking the cancellation back on the billing page before then keeps the team. Cancelled straight away, the team closes straight away. Accounts at the team's company domains are released, not removed. A subscription our payment provider ends because payments kept failing is different: the team lapses, as described in What happens if the team bill is unpaid.
Closing cannot be undone. There is no way to restore a closed team. If you only want someone else to run it, see how to hand your team to someone else.
Steps
- Open People & Team.
- At the bottom of the team card, choose Close team.... Only the Owner sees it.
- Read the dialog. It tells you how long everyone keeps the team's features, what happens to billing, and, if the team has company domains, asks what to do with people at those domains.
- Type the team's name where it says "Type [team name] to confirm". The button stays off until the name matches. Capital letters do not matter.
- Press Close team.
If you have not signed in within the last 15 minutes, you are asked to sign in again first.
What happens to people at your company domains
If the team has verified domains, the dialog asks about the accounts at those domains:
- Release them (recommended). They keep their accounts. Their company calendars are disconnected and the copies GetCalendario made from them are removed.
- Remove and freeze them. Their accounts are frozen now and deleted after 30 days. Because the team will be gone, they cannot be restored.
For the difference between Managed and Sponsored accounts, see Team members: Owner, Admin, Managed and Sponsored. Release and freeze work as described in leaving, removing and releasing people.
What does everyone else keep?
Everyone else on the team, including people with their own addresses, simply comes off the team. Their accounts, calendars and syncs stay theirs. They keep the team's features, usually for 14 days, and then go back to their own plan if it is still running, or to Free if it is not.
- A team that is still getting started, or that has been lapsed longer than its own grace period, is not covering anyone, so nobody gets extra days. A team lapsed more recently gives only the days left in its grace. The dialog shows which applies.
- Your own account stays yours. If you had a seat, you come off the team like everyone else and have the same days.
What happens to billing?
- Nothing more is charged, and nothing is refunded. The subscription stops at the end of the period already paid. If a payment is overdue, it ends right away.
- A team that never had a subscription, such as one still on its trial or getting started, says "Nothing is charged."
What are members told?
Each person gets an email. People who are released get one titled [Team name] released your GetCalendario account, which also explains that they should switch their sign-in address to a personal one before their company mailbox stops working. You get an email titled [Team name]'s team is closed when it is all finished. It says:
- how many people at your domains were removed, and the date their accounts are deleted, if you chose Remove and freeze,
- the date everyone else keeps the team's features until, and
- the date the subscription ends, or that it has already ended.
If someone had asked to take the team over, they are told the request ended because the team was closed.
While the team is closing
People are taken off in the background, so it can take a little while for a large team. People & Team shows how many people are still coming off, and nothing on the team can be changed. Nobody can join, be invited, take the team over or be handed it. You get the email once the team is gone.
What is kept: the activity log and the record of who left and when. What goes: the team itself, its pending invitations, join links and requests, and its domains.
If you already removed and froze someone before closing, they could have been restored until now. After the close, there is no team to restore them to, and Restore is no longer offered.
What to know
- Only the Owner can close. Admins cannot, and the right cannot be given to anyone. See who owns a team.
- If you press Close team a second time while it is closing, nothing more is queued, and the first choice stands.
- The Owner cannot delete their own account while the team is open or closing. Hand it over or close it first.
- Anyone with their own account can start a team from People & Team. Team prices are on the pricing page.
