Which passkeys can lock your backups

Updated 6 October 2026

Every passkey can sign you in to GetCalendario. Only some can also lock your Daily Backups. Locking needs the passkey to give back an extra secret key, and only some apps that store passkeys can do that.

Passkeys that can lock backups

These work, as long as the app or device is up to date:

  • Windows Hello on current Windows
  • Google Password Manager, in Chrome or on Android
  • The Passwords app on iPhone, iPad and Mac
  • 1Password
  • YubiKey 5 and other recent security keys

Passkeys that cannot

  • Dashlane. Dashlane passkeys sign you in but cannot lock backups.
  • Older security keys.
  • Signing in with your phone from a computer (scanning a QR code) is unreliable. The passkey on your phone may lock backups when used on the phone itself, but not when used this way.

If yours is not listed, it may still work: add it and look at its label, below.

How to tell which kind you have

Open Settings, go to the Security tab, and look at Passkeys. Each passkey says which app it is saved in. One that cannot lock backups is labelled "Signs you in, but can't lock Daily Backups". The Daily Backups page also tells you, and names the app when it recognises it.

Why the right kind switches backups on

If you have never chosen where your backups go, Our servers, locked is switched on for you the first time you sign in with, or add, a passkey that can lock them. Nothing else is needed: that passkey is the key, and nothing we hold can open the backups. You get an email saying so, and a reminder to save a recovery code in case you lose the passkey.

A passkey that cannot lock backups does not switch them on. There would be nothing to lock them with, so every nightly backup would fail. Backups stay off until you add a passkey of the right kind, or choose a setting yourself.

If you have already chosen something, including No backups, a passkey never changes it.
